Social conformity is the process of adjusting your behavior to fit with what the group expects. People do this to belong, avoid social sanctions, or because they believe the group has correct information, leading to actions that mirror peers or dominant norms.

The other terms describe different ideas: a role is the set of duties tied to a social position, not the act of changing behavior to match the group. Secondary socialization refers to learning new norms after childhood, often in new environments, rather than the ongoing act of conforming to group expectations. Sanctions are consequences used to enforce norms; they influence conformity, but they are the mechanism that reinforces it, not the act of adjusting behavior itself.
